2. Fired Up! – Key Things to Know About Employment Terminations (10:05 a.m. to 11:05 a.m.)

Firing an employee is fraught with difficult legal and practical issues. When an employee is terminated, several different legal regimes stack on top of each other to determine their rights and the employer’s obligations. But the law is only part of the story; the rest is strategy. This engaging and informative session will make sure you’re prepared for the difficult process of employee terminations, whether in your own office or for a client you’re supporting. We will also briefly discuss other significant employment law updates.

Mr. Albert is a Chartered Accountant and holds a graduate diploma in Investigative and Forensic Accounting from the University of Toronto. Mr. Albert is also a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University with an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration.

He is a member in good standing of the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals, INSOL International and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Robert graduated from McGill University Law School (B.C.L., LL.B.) and has been a tax lawyer for 30 years. Robert provides advice regarding Canadian tax and estate planning; and tax litigation and representation with respect to CRA audits and appeals. A large portion of Robert’s practice includes private owner-managed companies, entrepreneurs, professionals, and high net worth individuals, both foreign and domestic.

Robert was the Chair of the Ontario Bar Association Tax Section Executive (2012 – 2013).

Jean-Pierre is by training a pension lawyer specializing in employee benefits and retirement plans. Until July 2012 he practiced out of the Toronto office of Bennett Jones LLP, a leading Canadian business law firm.  He was then appointed Chief Executive Officer of INTEGRIS Pension Management Corp., a provider of pension plans to incorporated professionals and small business owners.  

Jean-Pierre has written a number of journal articles on pension reform and pension administration, including the seminal concept paper on the Supplemental Canada Pension Plan published in 2004 by Benefits and Pensions Monitor, his idea having been advocated by provincial governments, thought-leaders and industry groups.   Jean-Pierre also drafted a private member’s bill in the Parliament of Canada that focused the federal government on adopting legislation to protect long-term disabled workers operating in federal employment.  His most recent publication in the Canadian Tax Journal is entitled “A Review of Individual Pension Plans”.

He has often appeared as an expert witness before Standing Committees of the House of Commons.  

For his efforts at improving pension security for Canadians, Jean-Pierre was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by His Excellency the Governor-General of Canada.

Natalie is a family law lawyer and litigator with extensive experience working with high net worth clients with complex financial and business issues as well as contested family issues.  She has nearly a decade of hands-on and practical experience working in fast-paced boutique family law firms.

Natalie strongly advocates for her clients both inside and outside of the courtroom.  As a litigator, Natalie has appeared before both the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice in a number of jurisdictions, including Toronto, York Region, Peel Region, Region of Halton, Dufferin County, Simcoe County and Hamilton.

Natalie is a strong proponent of alternative dispute resolution and has participated in a number of mediations.  Her goal is to achieve maximum results in an expedient manner when possible, saving her client’s time and frustration in an already difficult process. Her practice includes the negotiation and drafting of marriage contracts and separation agreements.

Natalie earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.  Natalie was called to the bar in 2009. Prior to joining Bortolussi Family Law in 2010, she worked in the areas of Family Law, Real Estate and Estate Planning.

Natalie is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Julie has been practicing Family Law since her call to the bar in 2010 in a full range of Family Law matters, including complex parenting, financial support, and property issues.  She negotiates and drafts Marriage Contracts and Separation Agreements and represents her clients in the Collaborative Family process, mediations, arbitrations and in court.  Julie obtained her Juris Doctorate degree at Osgoode Hall Law School, and her Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from York University.

Julie is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, York Region Family Law Association, and York Collaborative Practice.
