Please note that this is a full day event and will be held at the Donalda Club. The structure of the event is as follows:

 4. Five Decision Making Biases That Damage Advice and How to Avoid Them (1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.)

Clients and advisors like to think of themselves as strictly rational decision makers. However, we are all prone to many different decision making biases and heuristics that reduce the efficacy and success of our planning efforts. This presentation reveals five common biases that arise in the context of estate planning and business transition with suggestions on how to be aware of their presence and how manage their effects.

The cost of the seminar and lunch is $225 (+tax), which you can pay by any credit card. You will earn 9.0 hours of PD credits when you attend a session. We are pleased to offer an easy, inexpensive and enjoyable way to meet your PD requirements. 

If you can't make the event, your registration fee entitles you to unlimited access to the event webinar that will be posted shortly after the event and, of course, the PD certificate from listening to the webinar.  If you prefer a refund, please ensure that you give us at least 48 hours notice.

Taryn is the director of audit assurance within the research, guidance and support group at CPA Canada. In this role, she oversees the development of CPA Canada’s research, guidance and thought leadership related to assurance matters. This includes implementation guidance for new or complex audit and assurance standards; resources regarding the impact of technology on the audit and assurance profession, including data analytics, blockchain and artificial intelligence; and assurance implications of emerging forms of external reporting.

Prior to joining CPA Canada, Taryn was a manager at MNP LLP, specializing in the audits of small- to mid-sized public companies. She also delivered accounting and assurance technical sessions for members of the firm, as well as for students in the CPA professional education program, and was a part-time practice inspector with CPA Ontario and a part-time instructor at the Schulich School of Business at York University.

Chris is the author of “The Naked Opus: Growing Your Family Wealth for the Long Term” (2018). He is a Family Enterprise Advisor, Lawyer, Finance Professor at Fanshawe College, Professional Speaker and Intergenerational Family Wealth Strategist. Since 2004 he has worked with Canada’s two largest bank-owned wealth management firms as a High Net Worth Estate Planner and Business Succession Advisor. In this role, he worked with enterprising business families and families of wealth and their advisors to help them develop goals-based, strategic intergenerational wealth continuity plans.

In 2015, Chris completed the Family Enterprise Advisor Program through the Institute of Family Enterprise Advisors (IFEA). He has also undertaken the CICA In-Depth 1 & 2 and the Owner Manager program from 2006 to 2009. He is the Chair of the London and Southwestern Ontario chapter of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners (STEP).

As the result of a life changing 14 - year dementia care experience involving her Father, Karen founded the Long Term Care Planning Network, Canada’s leading resource centre for aging and long term care planning and education. Her seminar series, web site, newsletter and print/electronic tools are recognized as key international long term care educational resources.

 

For the past 25 years, Karen has been a well-known speaker, educator, writer, media commentator, publisher and consultant in the field of caregiving and long term care, who has been published in leading geriatric journals in Canada. Over the years she has sat on many not-for-profit/government committees concerned with aging, Alzheimer’s disease, and elder abuse. She has been featured frequently on television and radio and helped write/produce the 13-part television series Caregiving With June Callwood. Both Health Canada and the Ontario government have asked her to create articles for public education. Karen is also a Certified Professional Consultant on Aging (CPCA) and is author of a unique series of print resources including The 10-Step Long Term Care Planner.

 

Karen has worked with Canadians and their professional advisors across Canada to help them understand the implications of aging and long term care on financial, personal and family well-being.

Ian received his JD from Queen’s University Faculty of Law in 2013 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2014.  Ian has practiced tax law in Toronto since his call to the Bar.  Prior to joining Spectrum Law Professional Corporation, Ian practiced at a boutique tax law firm, which focused on tax litigation.  Ian practices taxpayer dispute resolution focusing on individuals and small businesses and is developing a practice focusing on personal and business tax planning, corporate reorganizations, trusts and Wills and estates.

Nathan has been a member of the Ontario Bar since 2006 and receives his Master of Tax in 2009.  Since 2006, he has practiced tax in Toronto and is the Founding Principal of Spectrum Law Professional Corporation, a boutique law firm exclusively focused on tax and estate planning for privately held businesses and other high income earners.  Nathan advises on a full spectrum of tax and related issues, with specialized knowledge in transactions related to family succession planning, corporate reorganizations, Wills and estates, estate administration, family trusts, life insurance and tax dispute resolution.  Nathan regularly meets with business owners, accountants, financial planners and other lawyers to discuss planning opportunities that may be available to them or their clients.
