7. Tax Disputes for Owner/Managers (3:25 p.m. to 4:25 p.m.)
When a business has been improperly reassessed, it is important to work skillfully and cost effectively with your client to dispute the reassessment. Businesses and owners commonly find themselves reassessed in regards to matters such as expenses, losses, management fees, etc. During this presentation, Christine Ashton (a lawyer and partner with Wilson Vukelich LLP) will discuss best strategies for objecting to and appealing a reassessment. The presentation will specifically focus on common reassessments disputed by owner/managers.
Christine’s practice is divided between labour and employment law and tax litigation. Christine is dedicated to providing her clients with creative and effective solutions, in a responsive manner. Christine regularly works with accountants to successfully represent clients at the objection stage, at the appeal stage before the Tax Court of Canada, on applications for judicial review before the Federal Court, on rectification applications, for remission orders, and in regards to requests for taxpayer relief.

About the Instructor(s)
Having honed her impressive legal skills over the years, Seema’s focus is on finding practical and creative solutions for business and legal problems. Prior to opening her firm, Seema gained a substantial and broad range of legal experience, spending time in-house at a large multi-national company, in private practice at two of Canada’s leading law firms and at one of the world’s most prominent ‘magic circle’ international law firms in London, England.
Since opening her firm in 2017, Seema already counts 2 large multinational automotive companies and a Canadian technology-based university amongst her clients. Seema’s mandates have included advising on all legal aspects for the design and introduction of cutting-edge technology in the automotive sector. In addition, Seema has conducted several privacy reviews and audits and has designed and implemented compliance management programs under Canada’s privacy (PIPEDA) and anti-spam (CASL) legislation, including delivering training to clients in these areas.
Seema also has extensive experience advising companies and financial institutions on restructuring and insolvency matters. She has acted for several major Canadian banks on the enforcement of creditor rights and on several of Canada’s major restructurings, including the proceedings of Stelco Inc. and AbitibiBowater Inc. under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA).
Seema’s background and experience have allowed her to excel in the areas of general corporate/commercial, privacy, anti-spam, and insolvency law. She has experience advising clients in a wide range of industries, both domestic and international, including automotive, mining, oil & gas, retail and banking.

Christine is a partner with Wilson Vukelich LLP, a full service firm in Markham and a leader in business and tax law. Christine’s practice is devoted to the areas of labour and employment law, tax litigation and related litigation.
In regards to her labour and employment law practice, Christine represents unionized and non-unionized employers in all aspects of labour and employment law. Christine is thoroughly versed in issues surrounding the employment relationship from hiring, discipline, compensation, performance management, workplace health and safety, human rights, through to termination.
In regards to her tax litigation practice, Christine represents individuals and corporations in their disputes with the Canada Revenue Agency. Christine works with accountants to successfully represent clients at the objection stage, at the appeal stage before the Tax Court of Canada, on applications for judicial review before the Federal Court, on rectification applications, for remission orders, and in regards to requests for taxpayer relief. Christine is particularly focused on positively resolving business related tax disputes, such as the improper assessment of independent contractors as employees, the denial of valid business expense claims, shareholder benefit assessments, and director assessments.
Christine is an active member of various committees, boards, and associations, including acting as the 2018 President of the Ajax Pickering Board of Trade. Christine regularly moderates and speaks at events, including those held by the Ontario Bar Association, the Professional Engineers Ontario, the Ajax Pickering Board of Trade, and the Oshawa Chamber of Commerce.
Brenda Cane Blackwell
Brahm is a serial entrepreneur and management executive, currently providing advisory work in mergers, acquisitions and financing.
- Founded and developed the M&A Club Canada in 2009 into a Canada wide organization, comprised of 14 Clubs and heading to 1000 members for 2020. Established the annual M&A Forum, a day-long conference, as well as the annual M&A Awards Gala to recognize and celebrate the successes within the M&A professional community.
- Employed in top management positions in the clothing industry in Montreal.
- Created both a domestic manufacturing business and subsequently an import business for clothing from France. Both companies sold to competitors.
- CEO of a 200 person manufacturing company and engaged as a strategic consultant to clothing manufacturers in Montreal.
- CEO of Canada’s largest Health Club (175,000 sq. ft.) working for absentee Japanese and US owners.
- Launched a $15m Fundraising Campaign for the McGill University Health Centre.
