1. Choosing The Right Technology (9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.)

What does it take to get ready to adopt technology – including finding the most suitable solution(s) for your company and how to decide which is the right one.

2. Engaging Executors Crucial to the Greatest Wealth Transfer in History (10:05 a.m. to 11:05 a.m.)

The testator era isn’t coming soon; it’s already here.  The largest transfer of wealth in Canadian history is under way right now and executors are the conduits to their testator parents and the inheriting heirs.  By virtue of their selection, executors are the most trusted and influential people in their testator parents’ lives and yet, most professionals completely ignore them. 

This presentation highlights the challenges modern executors face using brief case studies, the calamities that can arise and the solutions advisors can immediately offer to build crucial relationships.  Attendees will learn how to engage with executors prior to the death of their testator parents to add tangible value offering services such as estate liquidity analysis, projected tax assessments, cross-border tax consultation, multiple estate tax returns at time of death and services to heirs, a whole new conduit of dream clients.

5.  Five Decision Making Biases That Damage Advice and How to Avoid Them (1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.)

Clients and advisors like to think of themselves as strictly rational decision makers. However, we are all prone to many different decision making biases and heuristics that reduce the efficacy and success of our planning efforts. This presentation reveals five common biases that arise in the context of estate planning and business transition with suggestions on how to be aware of their presence and how manage their effects.

6. Digital Transformation: How Artificial Intelligence fits into the real estate industry (2:20 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.)

8. CPA Canada Audit & Assurance Resources (4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.)

Representatives from CPA Canada will discuss audit & assurance resources developed to support Small- and Mid-sized Practitioners (SMPs). CPA Canada makes an effort to engage with stakeholders in a variety of ways to identify the needs of SMPs. This session is meant to be interactive – participants are encouraged to consider what resources would be useful to them as SMPs in their roles as assurance providers and provide input and feedback to CPA Canada.

Having honed her impressive legal skills over the years, Seema’s focus is on finding practical and creative solutions for business and legal problems. Prior to opening her firm, Seema gained a substantial and broad range of legal experience, spending time in-house at a large multi-national company, in private practice at two of Canada’s leading law firms and at one of the world’s most prominent ‘magic circle’ international law firms in London, England. 

Since opening her firm in 2017, Seema already counts 2 large multinational automotive companies and a Canadian technology-based university amongst her clients. Seema’s mandates have included advising on all legal aspects for the design and introduction of cutting-edge technology in the automotive sector. In addition, Seema has conducted several privacy reviews and audits and has designed and implemented compliance management programs under Canada’s privacy (PIPEDA) and anti-spam (CASL) legislation, including delivering training to clients in these areas.

Seema also has extensive experience advising companies and financial institutions on restructuring and insolvency matters. She has acted for several major Canadian banks on the enforcement of creditor rights and on several of Canada’s major restructurings, including the proceedings of Stelco Inc. and AbitibiBowater Inc. under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA).

Seema’s background and experience have allowed her to excel in the areas of general corporate/commercial, privacy, anti-spam, and insolvency law. She has experience advising clients in a wide range of industries, both domestic and international, including automotive, mining, oil & gas, retail and banking.

Chris is the author of “The Naked Opus: Growing Your Family Wealth for the Long Term” (2018). He is a Family Enterprise Advisor, Lawyer, Finance Professor at Fanshawe College, Professional Speaker and Intergenerational Family Wealth Strategist. Since 2004 he has worked with Canada’s two largest bank-owned wealth management firms as a High Net Worth Estate Planner and Business Succession Advisor. In this role, he worked with enterprising business families and families of wealth and their advisors to help them develop goals-based, strategic intergenerational wealth continuity plans.

In 2015, Chris completed the Family Enterprise Advisor Program through the Institute of Family Enterprise Advisors (IFEA). He has also undertaken the CICA In-Depth 1 & 2 and the Owner Manager program from 2006 to 2009. He is the Chair of the London and Southwestern Ontario chapter of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners (STEP).
