About the Instructor(s)
Igor Kastelyanets was called to the bar in Ontario in 2014 and has substantial experience in the field of taxation. Igor has appeared at the Tax Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal. He is a member of the executive committee of the Ontario Bar Association, Young Lawyers Division Continuing Legal Education Committee.
Duane has been advising individuals, small businesses and multi-national entities on a variety of tax issues since his call to the Ontario Bar in 2003.
After gaining close to 9 years of experience working for large Bay Street law firms, Duane opened his own tax boutique firm in 2011 where he is able to provide quality tax advice, at reasonable rates.
During his career, he has been involved in some of the most complicated and high profile transactions in Canada, and participated in several ground-breaking tax litigation cases. Having been trained and mentored by some of Canada’s best lawyers, he brings a unique perspective and varied experience to his practice.
James Rhodes operates a boutique taxation firm, TaxationLawyers. The firm focuses on representing clients in tax disputes against the CRA, both at the audit and objection levels, as well as litigating issues to Tax Court of Canada and Federal Court of Appeal. In addition, the firm also provides all types of relief sought from the CRA such as Voluntary Disclosure Program and Taxpayer Relief applications, and rectification orders. The firm also works with accounting firms to provide audit insurance to ensure taxpayers’ returns stay statute barred and not opened for reassessment.
James received his law degree from the University of Manitoba where he received the award for the highest mark in taxation law. Subsequently, James received a prestigious clerkship with the Tax Court of Canada. During his time with the Tax Court, he prepared bench memoranda and legal opinions to assist the Justice of the Court in their role of deciding tax appeals.
Following his clerkship, James was employed by PwC and then KMPG. He went on to pursue a Master of Tax from the University of Waterloo and ultimately accepted a role with the Department of Justice carrying on tax litigation and conducted over a hundred trials before the Tax Court and also appearing before the Federal Court of Appeal.
Subsequently, James was hired to create a tax dispute resolution practice for the Miller Thomson’s Waterloo office. After working with Miller Thomson, James left in 2012 to form TaxationLawyers.
TaxationLawyers has expanded into a network of former Department of Justice tax lawyers that provide tax dispute services across Canada.
James is also the founder of the LinkedIn group ‘Canadian Taxation Professionals’ which has over 5,000 members who as a community work together to assist one another in navigating and resolving tax problems.
Ms. Nadia Rusak is the managing partner of Cragmore, an independent Canadian based law firm providing tax planning and tax dispute resolution services to individuals, businesses and private equity funds operating in Canada and internationally.
Having spent over 10 years advising and defending some of the most sophisticated public companies and institutional investors operating in Canada and internationally, Ms. Rusak now devotes her practice entirely to private clients, including owner-managed businesses, high-net worth individuals, families and estates. Ms. Rusak has extensive experience in structuring M&A transactions and business reorganizations; representing taxpayers before Canadian and foreign tax authorities; managing sensitive voluntary disclosures; developing estate and succession plans; planning for individual and business migration; and assessing the risks and opportunities of complex tax strategies, financial products, and offshore structures.
Ms. Rusak is a frequent speaker on various topics of Canadian and international tax law at the Canadian Tax Foundation (CTF), International Tax Association (IFA), Association de la planification financière et fiscale (APFF) and Accounting Global Network (AGN). She serves as a sessional lecturer of Taxation and Corporate Taxation at the Faculty of Law, McGill University. She has written numerous books and articles which appear in Canadian and international tax publications.
Ms. Rusak has been recognized as an expert tax lawyer by the Government of Quebec, Lexpert, Chambers Global, Acquisitions International and CREW (Commercial Real Estate for Women).
Ms. Rusak received her B.C.L./LL.B. from McGill University and her Master’s in Tax Law from Osgoode Hall Law School.
Tony is an estate and tax planning accountant and life insurance advisor. Before founding AMS Wealth, Tony held various director positions within wealth advisory firms and began his career with PwC providing tax compliance and planning to high net-worth individuals and business owners. Tony provides sophisticated estate & insurance planning alternatives with a focus in helping business owners identify issues and opportunities relating to business succession planning. This approach helps clients through the complexities of wealth transition and tax minimization strategies.
Tony has provided insightful information on matters regarding personal finance, tax and estate planning to various media outlets such as the Financial Post, The Globe and Mail, Advisor.ca and has appeared as a guest on BNN television and CBC radio.
Tony has tutored for the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program and has been a facilitator for the CPA Ontario program.
Simon Thang, LL.B, LL.M is a sales tax lawyer and the principal of Thang Tax Law. Simon has over a decade of experience exclusively in sales tax (GST/HST, PST), customs and trade gained at prominent Bay Street law firms. He assists a range of clients including multi-nationals, small and mid-sized businesses and individuals.
This experience gives Simon the insight to advise on a range of issues and industries, including: owner-managed businesses; purchase and sale of businesses, real estate transactions, non-profits and charities, financial services and investments, business reorganizations, cross-border transactions, medical and health professionals, and non-resident businesses. Simon also has experience in customs and trade matters.
In addition to providing sales tax advice, Simon represents clients in all phases of tax disputes.
Simon has taught commodity tax as a member of the adjunct faculty Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto and has tutored the CPA GST In-Depth course. Simon has written extensively in the area of sales tax and has published book chapters, papers and articles in various publications. Simon is a frequent speaker on commodity tax issues and has presented at the Canadian Professional Accountants’ annual Commodity Tax Symposium, at the Tax Executives Institute’s annual Canadian Tax Conference, to the Law Society of Upper Canada, and to the Ontario Bar Association’s Taxation Group.
Simon received his Canadian law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and a Masters of Law (Taxation) from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Vitaly Timokhov is a partner at TaxChambers LLP. Vitaly practises exclusively in Canadian federal income taxation, with an emphasis on corporate taxation, mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, and cross-border taxation. Vitaly is admitted to practice law in Ontario, Alberta, and the State of New York. He has presented extensively on various issues concerning Canadian income taxation in the US and Canada at various venues, including the Canadian Tax Foundation, Federated Press, and American Bar Association. Vitaly is a member of Executive Committee of the International Tax Committee of the American Bar Association.
