About the Instructor(s)
Christine is a partner with Wilson Vukelich LLP, a full service firm in Markham and a leader in business and tax law. Christine’s practice is devoted to the areas of labour and employment law, tax litigation and related litigation.
In regards to her labour and employment law practice, Christine represents unionized and non-unionized employers in all aspects of labour and employment law. Christine is thoroughly versed in issues surrounding the employment relationship from hiring, discipline, compensation, performance management, workplace health and safety, human rights, through to termination.
In regards to her tax litigation practice, Christine represents individuals and corporations in their disputes with the Canada Revenue Agency. Christine works with accountants to successfully represent clients at the objection stage, at the appeal stage before the Tax Court of Canada, on applications for judicial review before the Federal Court, on rectification applications, for remission orders, and in regards to requests for taxpayer relief. Christine is particularly focused on positively resolving business related tax disputes, such as the improper assessment of independent contractors as employees, the denial of valid business expense claims, shareholder benefit assessments, and director assessments.
Christine is an active member of various committees, boards, and associations, including acting as the 2018 President of the Ajax Pickering Board of Trade. Christine regularly moderates and speaks at events, including those held by the Ontario Bar Association, the Professional Engineers Ontario, the Ajax Pickering Board of Trade, and the Oshawa Chamber of Commerce.
Jeff Chorlton, P.Eng, MBA
Jeff spent the first half of his career consulting for large corporates and government, doing large scale IT strategies and implementations. By the end of his corporate life 18 years ago, his legacy was to have sold the largest engagement ever for PwC in Canada – a record that still stands today. Overall, Jeff sold $350 million in consulting and accounting work while at Accenture and PwC.
In 1999, Jeff joined the entrepreneurial world and went on to manage Canadian operations of an SAP integration firm that went public. He subsequently ran two other tech organizations and while doing so, noticed a gap in the corporate services market. As a result, he went on to found Flexserv in 2011.
For the past 25 years, Jeff has also served on a variety of corporate, not-for-profit and charitable Boards.
As a senior tax manager in the Canadian tax practice, Sankalp advises owner/manager and large private companies in Canada and abroad regarding corporate tax requirements, opportunities and risks. He specializes in tax research, drafting opinions, tax and estate planning, corporate reorganizations, cross-border transactions, due diligence and advising clients on tax matters as well as liaise with the tax authorities at the audit level. In addition, he is also responsible for development of tax and audit staff. He works closely with the tax and audit partner groups to identify and deploy new planning opportunities that may be delivered to the firm’s clients and in the marketplace. Sankalp is a Chartered Accountant having earned his designation in 2012. He also holds a Master of Taxation degree from University of Waterloo. Sankalp has written tax articles for CPA Canada, The Lawyer’s Daily and RSM Canada LLP.
Igor Kastelyanets was called to the bar in Ontario in 2014 and has substantial experience in the field of taxation. Igor has appeared at the Tax Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal. He is a member of the executive committee of the Ontario Bar Association, Young Lawyers Division Continuing Legal Education Committee.
Jonah Mayles, LLB
Tax, Estate and Insurance Planning Consultant
Jonah is responsible for advising and developing advanced estate and tax planning strategies for clients. He brings over 10 years of experience in tax and estate planning for high net-worth individuals and private corporations. His practical experience provides him with the ability to formulate tax-efficient solutions using insurance for clients in an increasingly prohibitive and complex tax environment.
Prior to his current role, he was most recently a member of Canada Life’s National Estate and Tax Planning Team. He was a tax lawyer at Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP and Torkin Manes LLP where his practice focused on business succession planning, estate planning, advising on and drafting family trusts and structuring/implementing tax-efficient sales and purchases of businesses.
Jonah has been a frequent speaker on tax, estate and insurance and has written for numerous legal publications, including CCH Tax Topics and the Columbia Journal of Tax Law. Jonah is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and holds a BA (Honours) from University of Western Ontario and an LLB from Queens University Law School.
Duane has been advising individuals, small businesses and multi-national entities on a variety of tax issues since his call to the Ontario Bar in 2003.
After gaining close to 9 years of experience working for large Bay Street law firms, Duane opened his own tax boutique firm in 2011 where he is able to provide quality tax advice, at reasonable rates.
During his career, he has been involved in some of the most complicated and high profile transactions in Canada, and participated in several ground-breaking tax litigation cases. Having been trained and mentored by some of Canada’s best lawyers, he brings a unique perspective and varied experience to his practice.
